The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.39

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on November 25, 2023 by LarryNovember 25, 2023

I hope you were all able to enjoy time with family and friends this Thanksgiving, and that each of us took a moment to consider how much we do have to be thankful for. We all face difficulties in our lives, but God is still good. We are still blessed beyond measure. There is no greater blessing than to know that we are part of the family of God.

This week, we’ll pick up our study with John Chapter 16. As we begin, Jesus is still speaking to the disciples about the persecution that will come to them for the sake of His name. Then, he returns to the topic of His immanent departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. I believe that one reason he comes back to this topic is to emphasize the role of the Holy Spirit as helper it times of persecution. He has already told them, as recorded by Mark, “And when they lead you away, delivering you up, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit.” (13:11) Now, He provides more insight into the action of the Holy Spirit in the world and in the life of a disciple. Jesus is no longer with us in the flesh, but the Holy Spirit is always with us, and in is. He speaks for Jesus, and he directs all glory to Jesus.

We have instances in scripture where the Father is worshiped. We also have accounts of Jesus receiving worship both on Earth and in Heaven. We have no such accounts of the Holy Spirit receiving worship. It is not that He isn’t worthy of it. He, too, is God. But He directs all attention to Jesus and to the Father.

Yet, it is the Holy Spirit whose presence we sense. It is the Holy Spirit who speaks to our spirits. It is He who guides us to the truth and warns us away from error. It is He who lives within us and desires to have that communion with us. He is the Spirit of almighty God, and that is a wonder beyond words. You have the potential, even the right as a child of God, conferred by Jesus at the cross, to be in the presence of your creator, and to have His presence within you! What an awesome thing! Even to think about it makes me want to get up from my chair and fall on my face in reverence. Do not take this lightly. Let Him fill your heart and change your life!

See you at church!

love you all.

Praise and Prayer Requests from Sunday Service of November 19

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on November 19, 2023 by LarryNovember 19, 2023

Rejoice with us and pray with us.

Debra had a good time with a friend on Friday. Linda is doing better. Cathy’s brother nad a safe and successful trip. Kay is recovering a bit but still needs our prayers. Cathy got a good report from her doctors.

Debra is concerned that she may not be able to get medication that she needs. Her dog is having eye problems. She is hoping to be able to go to a conference next year. Cathy asks prayer for Sue K with lung cancer. She asks prayer for a friend Judy who recently had a stroke. Remember her friend Teresa and brother Gary. Pray for Pris’s friend Debby with cancer. Keep praying for Don. Cathy asks prayer for Dianne with breast cancer. Pris is having problems with her eye. She’s having trouble with her back. Remember Kimi. Don asks prayer for a new friend at work that he hopes to minister to.

Be an answer to prayer this week. The Holy Spirit will show you how.

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.38

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on November 18, 2023 by LarryNovember 18, 2023

Blessings to you, family and friends of BBT. I never did write down the prayer requests from last week. I started that practice back when we first built the web site. I thought it would be a good way for us to have a reference as we pray throughout the week. I am also very aware that what is written here is available to the world, so I always try to be careful not to reveal too much personal information. It might be more useful to us if I took it private, requiring members to log in to read them. That way, I or whomever keeps the requests in future would be able to be more specific without revealing things that ought to be kept among ourselves. Let me know what you think. Do you refer to the prayer request page? Would you find it more useful if we could provide more detail on the requests? Do you have other ideas that would make our web site better?

This Sunday, I’ll be continuing with our study of John’s gospel in Chapter 15, verses 18-27. Jesus has been preparing His disciples for his immanent departure. He has told them to love each other and showed them what He means. He has told them how to show their love for Him, and these things are connected. He has promised them the Holy Spirit. Now, he tells them how the world is going to respond. It will hate them, just as it hated Him. This is because they are no longer of it. He has called them out.

He has also called us out. When we answer, he begins a transformation within us that makes us something completely alien to the world. We think differently. We act differently. Our values change. At least, these are the things that should happen. If they don’t, we have some tough questions to ask ourselves. In too many churches today, we are trying to make the world love us. If the world loves us, it means we are still a part of it. That makes us His enemies, not His friends. That is not a place we want to be. Let us be known as those who follow Jesus, even to the cross.

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.37

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on November 9, 2023 by LarryNovember 9, 2023

Do you ever think about Jesus as your friend? What does that mean? I think that the word “friend” may be the second most abused word in the English language, the first being the word “love.” It has always been a term used loosely, but the rise of social media had diminished it further, so that it can even be applied to people you don’t even know.

Even though we use the word so lightly, we all know what it ought to mean. We long for those deep connections. We wish for someone out there to know us fully and love us anyway. We were made for relationship. Marriage should be the ultimate earthly expression and fulfilment of this need, but often is not. And we need friendships beyond this.

In church we hear about Jesus as our friend. We even sing about it. We know that he illustrated that friendship with his own blood. We can have no better friend, yet we can find it hard to internalize this reality. Jesus is God. He’s out there somewhere in a place we call Heaven. Unlike those who walked with Him while He was here, we can’t see Him, converse with Him as they did, or exchange a loving embrace. Our friend seems a very long way off.

That is why I think these chapters in John that we have been studying over the last few months are so special. On the night before He will be taken from them, Jesus prepares His closest friends not only for what is about to happen, but also for the time when He will truly be taken from them to dwell with the Father until that day when He returns to rule the Earth.

He instructs them repeatedly to love each other, illustrating what He means by taking on a slaves job of washing their feet. He tells them how much He loves them, and tells them how they can return that love. Over and over we read that keeping His commandments is the way that we show our love for Him, and then he says again that His commandment is that we love each other. This love is the true spiritual fruit that all of His children will produce.

It is in this context that we find our passage for this week, John 15:12-17. It begins and ends with the commandment to love each other, and between we find the ultimate description of friendship, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (v. 13) Jesus has already proven Himself a friend to us. Will we prove ourselves friends to Him?

We need not, and in fact cannot, do it alone. He has given us the Holy Spirit to help us. If you belong to Him, He is not just with you. He is in you!

I call you friends, and I really want to see you on Sunday!

love y’all

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.36

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on November 3, 2023 by LarryNovember 3, 2023

We enjoyed our 5th Sunday Fellowship this week. I only wish there were more of us to celebrate. It is comforting to be among the Family of God, spending time together, building each other up, worshiping our Lord, and sharing a meal together. It is my prayer that as we share that love outside the walls of our building we will add to our little branch of God’s family.

On Sunday we will continue our study of John’s gospel with Chapter 15:1-11. In this chapter, we will see Jesus expand on the things He has been teaching on the night before His crucifixion. He has already set forth the expectation that his disciples should love and serve one another, that their love is evidenced by the keeping of His commandments, and that they will do even greater works by the authority of His name. This is all made possible by His coming work of redemption at the cross and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus now uses the analogy of the grape vine to further illustrate what He has been teaching. He is the source of life. Those who belong to him draw their sustenance through Him, and thereby produce fruit. Fruit-bearing branches are pruned so that they will produce more. A branch that does not fruit will be cut off. Scholars may debate the meaning of this, but one thing is clear. The mark of a true disciple of Jesus is the bearing of fruit. Fruit is the evidence of His life within us. So, what does it mean to bear fruit? What does a fruitful Christian look like? We can look to Jesus to find the answers. Come join us!

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.35

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on October 25, 2023 by LarryOctober 25, 2023

Dear friends, it was good to be back last Sunday. I’m sorry that we were a bit rushed, but glad to be able to be there. I hope you were blessed as I was.

Coming up is our 5th Sunday fellowship. We are ordering sandwiches, so please let us know if you would like to come and were not at church last time. Bring something to share if you can. If you have her info, please contact Cathy directly.

We will have a shorter service and I will deliver a shorter message. Do you believe me? 🙂 I’m going to talk a little bit about Halloween. Some Christians say we should have nothing at all to do with it. Others say it’s harmless fun. What is it? How did we end up celebrating it? What is God’s view? Some things should be obvious. A follower of Jesus should never be celebrating evil, but is everything about Halloween evil? Is there opportunity here for us to be a light in the darkness? Let’s find out. Don’t be scared. 🙂

See you Sunday. Love y’all!

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.34

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on October 19, 2023 by LarryOctober 19, 2023

First of all, my sincere apologies for last week. We were planning to do thing the usual way, but as the time approached it became clear that I could not safely leave Linda alone, and we did not have anyone on tap to come and be here with her. I look forward to seeing you next week. So, let’s try this again.

Last time we covered the final verses of John Chapter 14, but I want to go back and focus on verse 27. So many of us are facing major issues that can steal our peace. May God’s word help us to hold on to that precious gift, given to us through the Spirit of peace, because of the Prince of Peace. The world challenges us with, “Do you want a piece of me?” Our God invites us with , Do you want a peace of me?”

love you all.

Peace to you, loved ones. On the home front, I’m happy to report that Linda is home and doing a bit better than I would have expected from what I saw at the hospital. This brings me great comfort. You are also a comfort to me. Thanks to all who have reached out during this time. I apologize that we have not been able to respond appropriately to each of you.

The Bartimaeus Blog 2023.32

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on October 8, 2023 by LarryOctober 8, 2023

Good morning, friends. It has been a challenging couple of weeks for Linda and me as we walk through this season of our life. If all goes well this week, she’ll be coming home from the hospital on Friday. I mention that because it has some bearing on the message for today. We are covering John 14:25-31, with some emphasis on verses 26-27, which read (LSB), “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”

As I tried to prepare last week, I asked the Lord, “How can I speak of peace? I don’t have it.” Yesterday as I was praying, He brought to mind the psalms of King David. How many times did he cry out to the Lord for deliverance? How many times must he have wondered why the same God that parted the Red Sea did not step in and save his chosen king? There are some supernatural events recorded in his story, but mostly God shaped seemingly ordinary events to bring about His plan. David was indeed a significant part of God’s plan, but it was a much bigger plan! Our Lord was writing a story to save the world!

How is this relevant? It illustrates one of the ways that the Holy Spirit works in our lives. He brought to my mind His words in the pages of the Bible (v. 26) to remind me of the truth. He is in control. He is doing things greater than we can imagine. In this world we will have trouble, but He has overcome the world. From this I can find the peace that I am seeking. It is a peace only He can give, and it comes from the Holy Spirit living and working within me.

It is my prayer for all of us that we find and hold onto that peace. I hope you can join us this afternoon as we dig into God’s word.

Love y’all!
