You’ve heard people say, “The truth will set you free.” If you know your Bible, you know where that came from. Though often used out of its context, it’s a profound statement by itself. When we believe things that are not true, we become enslaved to a harsh master. Put the phrase in its context, and it becomes even more powerful. Spoken by Jesus as he continues teaching in the temple, it refers to the truth of His word, and the Truth that is Himself. We continue our study of the book of John. We’ll finish out Chapter 8, with particular focus on verses 31-36.
