Message for June 17 – What Makes a Good Father?

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on June 16, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 16, 2017
Hello friends and family.  I’m sorry I took so long to get this message out.  I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up all week after spending last weekend in Fort Worth.  I am just so thankful to live in a country where we can do things like I did and we can choose our leaders.  I hope you will take that responsibility seriously this November.

This Sunday is Father’s day and I am honored to get to speak to you on this special day.  I had the blessing of a wonderful father who helped make me what I am today, but I know that there are many who didn’t have good fathers.  So, what makes a good father?  When Jesus talks about our Heavenly Father, what does it bring to your mind?

Let’s examine what a good father is like by starting with the parable we usually call the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32.  I was talking with a friend the other day and he suggested we ought to call this the story of the good father.  I think he’s right, because it is the Heavenly Father that Jesus is illustrating for us.  Come and join us on this special day when we honor our earthly fathers and most of all our Father in Heaven.

Sunday June 10th 2012 “How are dealing with stress?”

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on June 6, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 16, 2017
We had another great day in church on Sunday.  Priscilla is leading us through the book of Revelations and she was really feeling the work of the Holy Spirit in her life about what is our first Love and have we lost it?  She will have another study this week.  We had Richard and Barbara visiting again this week and it was really nice to see them again.  Cathy presented some plans for the new windows in church and we are so excited about the new look at the church, but as we talked about last week, the new look on the outside will not matter if we as the church are messed up on the inside.  I can’t wait to be back in church on Sunday.

This week I am going to bring a message from Mark the 6Th Chapter verses 14-29.  This is a sad story of how the pressure of life affected King Herod in making a good decision.  This is our story as well.  How many times have we caved into peer pressure or were afraid to look different, so we have gone along with the crowd.  We need to understand we as Christians are held to a higher standard then to just be like everyone else.  I am not saying we are better then everyone else but we have a higher calling.  We are to stand for something much greater than to just be part of the group.  We are a child of the King and we have a responsibility to share the Joy and Peace we have with others.  We cannot accept what the World is offering to us and expect to be effective.  Our mission in life is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone we meet.  We cannot be passive, we must be aggressive in our love for Christ and truly make him our first love.  Our motivation is to please him, not the World.  We do not want to be like King Herod in this story and be willing to do something we know is wrong just to save our face.  Pride is a stronghold that we must break before we can really be what God wants us to be.  Please come visit us in Church on Sunday.  We start at 2:30 and I promise you will be blessed!!

I hope are remembering to pray for those mentioned in Church last Sunday.  I am looking for someone to come and share a miracle they saw this week!  We are going to have Church at the park on Sunday July 1st. We will have food and fun and fellowship and we will have our service at the park.  We had a picnic at this park a couple of year ago and we had a great time, this will even be better.  Makes plans to be there and invite someone to come with you.  Keep up the good work faithful members of BBT. Keep doing good things and call someone this week and invite them to come with you on Sunday.  We Love you and will see you Sunday!!!

Pastor David & Pris

Sunday June 3,2012

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on May 31, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 23, 2017
What a great day we had in church on Sunday.  It was soooo nice to Joel and Dana back with us and they really blessed us with their music. Bryan Rogers delivered a great message about how God can use the most unlikely people to do great things.  It was really an inspirational message.  I think we all feel like we are not really capable of doing the things God is asking us to do, but remember it is not us, it is Christ in us.  I look forward to hear from Bryan again.

This week I am going to speak about being thirsty.  This Memorial day my family was outside all day in the heat and I knew what it meant to be thirsty.  The people back in Jesus day really knew what it meant to be thirsty.  Clean water was a luxury in some places.  The scripture verse this week is found in the last chapter of the last book in the bible and it is the end of the chapter.  It is Revelation 22: 12-21.  I hope you will be there and be thirsty for what God has in store for us.  There are many verses in the bible talking about being thirsty this is just one of them.  We will look at several others along the way.

We missed Ruth last week as she was visiting with her sister but she is back and her sister is feeling better.  It was good to see Elke in church on Sunday and we are praying for her in her battle with cancer.  Keep doing good things and believing good things and God will continue to bless you and those you are praying for.  Keep our church family in your prayers and we will see you Sunday!!!

Sunday May 27th 2012 “Joel and Dana are Back”

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on May 23, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 23, 2017
It was a great day in church last week!!! If you are not going to church on Sundays you are missing out on a great fellowship and we at Bartimaeus would love you to come be part of our fellowship.  We minister to people with disabilities but we all need to be ministered to by God so come and see what God has in store for you.  Last week we were encouraged to get out and evangelize.  Linda showed us how we cannot just sit back and do nothing and expect people to come to us, we have to get out there and find people who are searching for something that we can offer.  What do we offer? A place to meet together and worship.  A group of people who care about one another. A place where God is pouring out his blessings, not because we are so good but because he is and a place where you will be accepted just as you are.  If you are looking for this kind of fellowship and want to hear from God join us each week at BBT.  Larry shared a message about how we need to receive discipline from God.  We all mess up but God does not love us less.  When we are in sin God misses our fellowship with him and he will do anything short of forcing us to confess our sins and get back in the fellowship of his loving grace.  If you missed his sermon on Sunday go the web cast and listen to what pastor Larry has to say on what we need to do to let God clean up our messes.

I have great news Joel and his team WILL be in the service this week.  We have missed them over the last two months but Joel and Dana have been doing great things and they are excited to be back with us on Sunday.  Please invite some one to come with you on Sunday and come praise and worship with Joel and Dana in our house, or should I say God’s house.  It will be exciting!!!!

If you are hurting this week and need a prayer partner call me and let me pray with you or I may have someone else that can pray with you that has gone through or is going through what you are going through now.  Don’t sit in silence and suffer because you think no one knows what you are dealing with, or even worse no one cares what you are struggling with.  As Larry showed us last week we all have problems and we need help and that is what we are here for.  We don’t have all the answers but I know one that does and he cares so much for you that he laid down his life for you.  Please continue to pray for those that we spoke about last week in our prayer request and lets come back Sunday ready to hear what God has for us.   This church loves you whether you know it or not and we want you to know it!!!

Pastor David and Pris

Message for May 20 – Don’t Hurt Yourself!

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on May 16, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 23, 2017
Hello friends and family. What a great time we had last week as we celebrated Mother’s Day.  We gave out our traditional Mother’s Day gifts, and Jana brought a little something for every woman who came.  Thanks to Don for working up something extra special for our worship time and Linda for putting it all together for us.

This week Linda will help us to explore more ways we can “be the church.”  I will talk about God’s view of sin, and I hope we will gain a greater understanding of why it is that He hates it so much.  What follows is a modified version of an open letter I shared a couple of years ago after learning of some things that were happening with people I know.  It remains just as relevant today and my heart still breaks for the choices we make that lead to death and destruction.

Don’t hurt yourself!  We’ve all heard that, or something like it.  It probably came from your mom as she watched you swinging from that tree or flying down the street on your bike with your hands proudly waving in the air.  Maybe she demanded that you stop immediately.  Sometimes parents can be a little too protective, but we grow to understand the motivation.  When you got older, the messages may have become more complex, but the underlying meaning was still the same.  “Don’t eat too much candy.”  “Don’t forget your homework.”  “Be home before midnight.”  “Stay away from that boy/girl.”  Our parents did what they could to help us grow up to be whole and well-adjusted adults and to keep us from the many perils of life in this world until we made it there.  Despite their best efforts, some of us don’t quite make it.

I suspect that only one child in the history of humanity accepted His parents’ rules without complaint. We don’t like rules.  We don’t like anything that keeps us from having what we want when we want it.  Often we rebel and do as we please anyway.  When we were children, our parents responded to this rebellion with some form of punishment.  In this case the consequence of our action is contrived, but with good reason.  If we do not learn that our actions have consequences as children, we will learn it as adults and they will be much more severe. Examine our prison population if you need proof.  A majority of the offenders there lacked strong discipline at home.
Why did our parents treat us this way?  In most cases, they were not exercising power for its own sake.  They did not take pleasure in causing us pain.  They did what they did because they loved us.  All of the rules, admonishments, lectures, and punishments were intended to shape and protect us.  They were saying, “I love you.  I want the best for you.  Don’t hurt yourself.”  Most of us figure that out at some point in our lives. We come to understand that love doesn’t require unrestrained indulgence.

It is no mere accident of language that God defines Himself as our Father.  He gives us children so that we can understand that aspect of His love for us.  He sets boundaries for us and gives us instruction to protect and nurture us because He loves us.  When we read the first few books of the Bible a while back, you saw a whole lot of rules. They are there to help us understand our relationship to a holy God and our abject need for His redemption, but many of them also served to protect His people.  In an era when no one could have known about the unseen pathogens that spread sickness and disease, God provided detailed instructions regarding clean and unclean that kept the people as safe as possible.  All of the rules were motivated by love.

Though Jesus has made a new and better way (Rom 5:8-9) and we know that salvation cannot be earned (Eph. 2:8,) He has given us instructions that are for our own good.  The ultimate tragedy is to refuse the gift that Jesus offers in Himself.  Miss that and nothing else really matters.  Yet it remains true that following the principles of living that He laid out for us in the Bible will keep us from much harm. This is the ache that is in my heart when I see people making poor choices.  When we share the Gospel message, one of the verses commonly referenced is Romans 6:23, which says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  We speak of the final damnation in Hell, but one need not look so far to see the truth in this passage.  Most of us will experience the consequences of our sin while we yet live on this earth.  This is often true even after we have repented and been forgiven.  We may be spared the ultimate consequence, but some things are going to happen just that’s because the way things work. Unless God in his mercy intervenes, we will not be spared earthly repercussions.

Oh loved ones, choose life! Enough suffering comes to us just because we live in a fallen world.  Please do not add to your misery by choosing short term pleasures that will bring you long term pain.  Study God’s word and live by it.  He makes no promise of freedom from suffering in this life.  In fact if you are truly devoted you may find that too brings you grief, but the reward is eternal!  Do not turn away from the One who loves you with everything He has.  I would see you truly live and not die.  In my own poor way I love you, but His love will never fail.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Sunday May 13 2012 ” Is it well with your Family? “

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on May 10, 2012 by David WhitmoreDecember 18, 2017
We had a great service last week and it was so good to see some faces that had been missing. This is the week of Mother’s day and I am excited to be able to honor our Mothers on Sunday.  Valentine’s day may be a made up holiday for Stores and florist but I can not think of a better person to have a special day then Mothers.  There is no greater gift to a child then to have good Christian parents and let’s face it Mothers spend more time with the children then anyone in most cases.  What is it we can do to show our Mothers what they mean to us?  Tell them, then show them by our actions.  Nothing means more to a parent then to see our children being a blessing to others. What is the fruit we produce as branches to Jesus vine?  Loving others.  Mothers are the example of loving others.  Who is that says when there are 5 people at the table and only four pieces of pie says “I don’t really care for pie.”  Who is it that we go to when we are hurting and need someone just to hold us? Who is it that listens to our stories and is excited about them even when we tell them over and over? It’s out Mothers.  God created Mothers to remind us how much he loves us.  I hope your Mother is still with you but if not, remember her this Sunday and thank God for her.

This week Linda is going to bring the Sunday School lesson and Larry has a special song for the Mothers this week.  My message is going to be the story of a terrific Mother.  The scripture verse this week will be found in 2 Kings 4: 8-37.  This is the story of a shunammite woman who was given a prophecy by Elisha that within a year she would have a child.  She did not believe him because she was older and had never bore a child. Sure enough she had a son.  This is the story of a Mother’s love and the grace of God.  I hope you will be in church this week and I hope all the Mothers will feel like an honored guest in our service this week.

Keep praying for those that need our help and lets make sure we are available to do the work God is providing for us.  Lets do GREAT things in the name of Jesus and remember God has a blessing for you today.  Don’t miss it by having a negative attitude and a unforgiving spirit.  We Love you and can’t wait to see you on Sunday.

Pastor David & Priss

Sunday May 6, 2012 “What’s in a Vine?”

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on May 2, 2012 by David WhitmoreDecember 18, 2017
Well we have made it into May.  We have a new roof at the church and new windows will be installed in the next few weeks.  I hope we have learned to appreciate what God is doing in our ministry.  I enjoyed the service last week and I am looking forward to the exciting events ahead.  I hope you will make your plans to spend these Summer Sundays in our cool air-conditioned church.

This week I am going to talk about what Jesus means when he says “ I am the vine”. The scripture verse this week is found in Gospel of John 15: 1-8.  Jesus is trying to make the people understand what he is telling them and he is using an example that they all know.  The people of Judea knew about vineyards like the people in Texas know about farming.  Growing grapes was very profitable back in those days.  Jesus was constantly trying to explain the kingdom of God in ways the people could understand.  We are going to use this analogy to our lives today on Sunday. Are we bearing fruit and if so what kind of fruit?  These verses in John speak very frankly that those branches that do not bear fruit will be cut away and destroyed. I hope we leave the service on Sunday ready to be the fruit bearing people.  What is God expecting from us?  And what should we expect from ourselves?  I hope you will be with us on Sunday as we try to answer these questions.

I am sorry I forgot to write down the prayer request, without Larry and Linda being in the service I am just lost .  I guess you two cannot be out anymore!  I do know that we need to be praying for Elke. She has started going to her chemo treatments and she is not feeling very well right now.  Hopefully she will feel better as soon as she is through with the treatment.  We had quite a few members out on Sunday and we want to encourage you to speak to those who we missed and make sure they know we missed them.  Keep doing good things and get pressing forward.  I know many of you are struggling with your finances in these summer months I know how you feel I told my wife it seems like we live so far beyond our income that it may almost be said we are living apart.  I know God has great things for all of us.  Lets just keep working as hard as we can for the Master.  We will see you on Sunday!!!!

Pastor David & Pris

Sunday April 29, 2012 “The Good Shepard”

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on April 25, 2012 by David WhitmoreDecember 18, 2017
We had another great time last Sunday as we are looking forward to the summer months ahead. I know that sounds strange to be looking forward to June, July and August in Texas but I am expecting God to do great things in our lives this summer!  I hope you will be in church every week to see what God is doing at BBT.

This is a extra bonus that only happens few times all year, a fifth Sunday. As I was thinking about what has happened over the last few weeks I was thinking about how much God loves us.  We saw it at Easter as we looked at his sacrifice for us.  We see it as we talk about how it forgives us of our sins and we have talked about how he wants us to have abundant lives.  This week I want us to look at Jesus as the Good Shepard.  The bibles versus this week are found in the Gospel of John the 10Th Chapter vs 11-18.  Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd.  What makes someone a good shepherd?  We need to know this because we are to be that very thing.  Whether you know it or not you are probably going to lead someone to something in your life.  Even if you don’t consider yourself a leader someone is going to look at you and see how you act and react to situations you have to face.  You may very well be setting the example for them to follow.  Let me ask you if you knew what you did were being recorded would you act different?  When we know that someone is watching it makes a difference in what we do, what we say and how we act.  Understand as you live your life God is watching our every move; let’s live our lives like we understand that.  Lets be the shepherd that leads our sheep to paths of righteousness.  We can be the good shepherd Jesus talks about but to do so we must be willing to lay down our lives for our sheep. No greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for another.

I hope you will be with us in church on Sunday.  We will miss Larry and Linda this week as they are on a couple’s retreat. I know they will have a great time.  Please pray for those we have posted in the prayer room and come on Sunday and see the new roof God has provided for the church!  God has more blessing than we can imagine I hope you will be part of them.  We love you and can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

Pastor David & Pris

Sunday April 22,2012 ” Why me Lord “

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on April 18, 2012 by David WhitmoreDecember 18, 2017
What a great day at church on Sunday.  I really enjoyed Sunday School and I was challenged by Larry to live what we preach.  How important it is to be honest with others, with yourself and with God.  We missed Frances during the Praise part of the service but we made it through.  What made this day so special was the baptism of our sister in Christ Jana.  She had accepted Christ earlier but she wanted to be baptized to follow the example of Christ.  What a thrill for me to be part in the baptism.

This week was the week for Joel and Dana to be with us, however he is going to have to travel this week so he will not be able to be here this month so I guess you will just have to put up with me this week.  I was thinking about a sermon for this week and I was reading scripture in Acts the 3rd chapter and I ask myself why did God pick the Jews to be his people? Look how they turned on him. Look how they did not understand him and even today they are still looking for the Messiah.  The scripture for this week is going to be Acts the 3rd Chapter verse 11 thru 19 but to get the background to these verses you need to start at verse 1.  When I ask God why do you choose the Jews his answer to me is why did I choose you?  We are going to look at this scripture and see how it applies to us everyday.  I hope you will be in Church and invite someone to come with you.  Lets share what we have.

Please continue to pray for those that are hurting.  I hope you are having a great week and I hope you are putting God at the top of your priority list and I hope to see you on Sunday.  Do great things for God sake and expect a blessing.

Pastor David & Pris

Message for April 15 – Honestly!

Bartimaeus Baptist Temple Posted on April 11, 2012 by Bart The BotOctober 30, 2017
Hello family and friends.  I hope this finds you all well, rejoicing in the goodness of our Lord after our Resurrection Day celebration last Sunday.  A big thank you to all of those inside and outside the church who helped make it happen.

Since we’ll be meeting next Sunday on what would be tax day, I thought it would be a good time to talk about integrity.  I don’t know what your experience has been, but I have found that if someone feels the need to tell you that they’re honest you should be on your guard.  An expectation of integrity seems to be woven into our being.  Yes, we’re all born in sin and lying comes naturally, yet we have to learn mistrust.  We expect that others are telling the truth until we discover that sometimes they don’t.  We just know there’s something wrong with that, at least when someone else does it.

Whether you grew up in a Christian family or not, you were probably taught that lying is bad.  In time you also learned that maybe sometimes it was not so bad.  Maybe sometimes it’s even good.  Is that so?  Are there circumstances where being less than completely honest in word or deed is acceptable and even right, or might Jesus be calling us to a higher standard?  How do we handle those situations in life that seem to demand that we stray from truth?  Is honesty only about what we say?

This Sunday I would like to show you how the concept of integrity is woven throughout the scripture from beginning to end, but we can get a clear picture of how Jesus would answer our questions just by looking at what He said.  First, He says that He is the truth in John 14:6.  If He embodies truth, then following Him requires pursuit of truth.  Emulating Him means practicing truthfulness.

He also told us where lies come from.  He says of Satan in John 8:44, “…He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.  Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Come and join us this Sunday as we explore how to live our lives with integrity.  I’m looking forward to it.  Honestly!
